Small town girl Glenda Davis publishes her first book with aspirations of more books to come.

Being raised in a small town, the author Glenda Davis had an idyllic life.

“The small town thing is me.” Davis said.

But with the publication of her first novel, Force Recon: Eagle by Publish America on May 25, 2009, she’s found herself in a bit of the spotlight.

Small Town Girl

Davis teaches algebra to students in the 9th through 12th grades. Since the publication of her novel, she’s found herself as the inspiration for some of her female students who want to be writers themselves.

“It is very exciting for them,” Davis said, “It is a huge thing in a small town to be published.”

Davis is from Lumberton, Mississippi, population 2,638. Growing up in Lumberton included fishing, hunting and playing backyard football. She married her high school sweetheart and they have two sons, aged 9 and 3.

The busy summer days of her youth were followed by nights of staying up all night reading or writing. Davis credits her love of reading and wondering what happened to the characters when the book was finished, as the inspiration that led to her own desire to write.

“I was always curious about what happened later,” Davis said, “It’s why I decided I would want to write a series of books.”

Davis describes Eagle as a love story that crosses different genres, including action, adventure and Christianity. The story revolves around a sniper and how he juggles his different roles in life.

“It tells about the difficulties that military families have when their soldier has to leave at a moment's notice for places they cannot reveal and the missions they cannot discuss.” Davis said.

Davis' Inspiration Behind Writing

She started to write the book after her younger brother joined the Marine Corps, but her book is not based on anyone in her life. He came home from boot camp one week before the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Davis said she and her family struggled with the fear of not knowing where her brother would go and she started writing to get her through her emotions of that difficult time.

“I’ve always dealt with anything weird by writing,” Davis said, “It would get me through my emotions.”

Having written for years, finding publication came pretty easy.

Davis did an internet search for publishers and immediately came across the Publish America website.

“The rest they say, is history.” Davis said.

She wants to write books that are part of a series and has several writing projects underway. She is currently working on the sequel to Eagle, to be titled Force Recon: Reb and will be about the brother of a character in Eagle.

Davis will have a book signing August 15 at Barnes and Noble in Gulfport, Mississippi.
