When a writer begins working on a manuscript, he might not want to spend his time thinking of last names. He probably doesn’t want his characters to have the generic last names Smith, Jones, or Johnson. At the same time, he may want his characters to have familiar last names. When a writer needs a last name for a character, it’s helpful to simply browse through a list, trying the first name with the last, checking for the way it flows and the impression it gives.
