I've got a day job, mind you, it's one that reminds me of the Geico commercial (It's so easy even a Caveman could do it!) but nonetheless, it still takes up the requisite 11 hours of my day, if you count getting ready and driving time. That leaves me with 13 hours left in the day.
My next biggest drain on my time is my children. After coming home in the evening, I spend a total of 4 hours cooking dinner, running laundry, helping with homework, giving baths and getting the little buggers in the bed.
After all that, I've only got 9 hours left before the new day starts.
Giving my penchant for long, drawn-out scalding baths, we'll round the number down to 8 hours left.
Now, I am one of those people that needs at least 8 hours of sleep, and 10 works better. But sadly, I rarely get that. Instead, After the kids go to bed I usually spend another 2-3 hours doing my stuff before heading off to sleep for a measly 5 or 6 hours of sleep.
So what do I do in my three hours (I'm being generous here) that I have left in the day? Well, I pay bills, answer my emails, work on this topic for Suite101, and write and edit the Reading site over at BellaOnline.com. If I have a spare second, I try to hop over to Zoetrope.com, and keep up with my network of Writer friends. Oh, and I have several blogs that I try to update at least once a month. And of course, I forgot the fact that I am also attending college classes online so that I can finish my degree even though I don't olan on doing anything with it...but that's another story.
So where do I get the time for fiction? I don't really. Mostly I create in my head and pray that I can get it down on paper at some point. Which is why I just bought myself a new laptop-- it's wireless! So the plan is to tote this baby with me everywhere, so I can peck away at a moments notice.
I'll let you know how it works out. Meanwhile, it's Sunday, and aside from all the housework that has built up from earlier in the week, I am going to carve out a few hours today to work on my fiction. And that's all I can do. But anything is better than nothing, right?
