New Year’s Resolutions for Writers

A Few Unusual Goals for 2008

I'm not making the usual "write for an hour a day" or "research a new magazine each week" resolutions.

A few weeks ago, I posted an article on New Year’s Resolutions for Writers, geared to improving the quality of your writing. I also wrote another on goals to help you get published.

Along the way, I’ve been pondering my own resolutions. What do I want to have accomplished when December 2008 rolls around? What do I want to work on through the year?

To be honest, I’ve been working on children’s books for so long, always working toward publishability for both them and my short stories, that I’m rather burned out. Combine that with an upcoming move from the United States to the Republic of Ireland this summer, and I’m ready to shift gears.

With that in mind, here are a few of my Writer’s New Year’s Resolutions:

  • Spend a few months writing longhand for a bit every day (it changes my tone).
  • Develop some of the adult characters in my head and write their stories, whether they finish at short story, short-short, or novella length.
  • Play with children’s stories as I get the urge, not to meet some self-imposed deadline.
  • Journal about moving to Ireland, and possibly create a blog.
  • Continue writing for Suite101, but limit the rest of my non-fiction writing.

Can you tell I’m taking some of the pressure off? So set some goals for yourself, but enjoy the process at the same time. Happy New Year!
