I'm writing a political thriller. Rather than pick a real country, I'd prefer to make up one that's modeled on somewhat of a composite of several regional nations. Can I get away with that in this day and age where readers and viewers tend to prefer realistic settings?

You know, Bryan, I've thought about it and stewed over it, and the conclusion I came to is . . . I just don't know. On one hand, I don't see why you couldn't create your own country, and I feel like it's been done before. On the other hand, if it's been done before, it may have been long ago, and I don't read enough political thrillers currently to know. Let me post the questions on a few bulletin boards and see what I come up with. And if you find an answer, or at least good comments, would you also post them here? Thanks, and I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.

Have done some more research on this. It seems that MOST movies, books, etc. with international themes are based on real countries. The Robert Ludlum Bourne thrillers are an example of that. But there ARE some with fictionalized countries, such as The Princess Diaries and in at least a couple James Bond movies.

Here's an interesting Wikipedia article on the subject...

I'm writing a story that takes place in a fictitious country. I've had a lot of inspiration from the movie, The Interpreter starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. Even though it's a movie rather than a book, I think that it pulls off the fake country really well within the political drama. I'd hate to reference a movie when discussing writing, but it's worth a look.
